This was, to no doubt, one of the most impressive, exciting and glamourous Met Gala events that I have seen so far. This year's theme was dedicated to honoring Karl Lagerfeld, who passed away in the beginning of 2019, from complications of pancreatic cancer. I was also impressed with what the men wore, too, with many choosing to steer away from the usual boring and formal black tuxedo suit, instead opting to be creative in their choice of outfits.
This year's event, however, did not go without controversy - due to the late Karl Lagerfeld's personal views and comments he made, specifically about women, the #metoo movement, plus size people and also refugees from the Middle East and Africa, with many questioning why the event organizers chose Karl Lagerfeld as a theme for this year.
There was also a protest, unrelated to the controversy surrounding Karl Lagerfeld, which was instead, about climate change and wealthy people. Despite the protest, fortunately there was minimal disruption at the event.

Finally, some male celebrities, including our own indigenous actor, who have nailed it with their outfits.
These ones are a far cry from the typical boring tuxedo or an office suit you would normally expect men to wear to a party, a function or a formal occasion. These are different male celebrities wearing different labels.
For those who missed out on watching the met gala live this year, or want to watch it again, here is the video of it.
These outfits show just how glamorous the event was, with this year being one of the most exciting and memorable met galas that we have seen so far, with the elegance, glamour and creativity of each outfit - despite the heavy and understandable controversy surrounding Karl Lagerfeld. I hope those of you who watched the Met Gala and browsed through the looks online enjoyed it as much as I did.

The Oscars this year was quite a memorable one, a historical one - and unfortunately, one that has also been tarnished by the events involving actor Will Smith and comedian Chris Rock. Both of them were in the wrong - violence is not OK at any time, but there is a boundary that should not be crossed when it comes to comedy.
Some memorable moments included Beyoncé's performance, to Cruella winning best costume design.
My favorite outfits of the Oscars
I liked Megan Thee Stallion's dress, which was a lovely blue, embellished dress with a cutout at the side. It really suited her, was very glamorous and the dress was Oscar appropriate. I also liked Nicole Kidman's Armani gown, as it was elegant and cute, and it's not an easy outfit to pull off. Jessica Chastain stunned everyone in her beautiful sparkly Gucci gown. Timothee Chalamet also stunned everyone with his unique and energetic look in the afterparty.
Least favorite outfit of the Oscars
The worst outfit of the Oscars was obviously Jane Campion's Christian Dior haute couture dress. People may have liked the dress - but I thought that wasn't appropriate for the Oscars due to the design and the fact the dress was an all - black colour, without any jewelry worn apart from earrings. The only place I think such a dress should be worn, is to a funeral (I wouldn't even wear it to a black tie event). I don't even consider this a couture dress - couture dresses tend to be more creative, and have more time spent into designs and are really unique and are difficult to make.
Interesting outfits that caught my attention
Zendaya's outfit is interesting because of the fact that it gives of Air New Zealand's air hostess vibes. I actually liked the outfit, oddly enough in part for this very reason, but also because the outfit was stunning also.
I also liked Kristen Stewart's outfit, and it was very interesting as her outfit was a far cry from what the other celebrities wore - most of them wore gowns, dresses or suits. However, the ensemble complimented her perfectly.
I have to admit, the unfortunate events of yesterday at the Oscars brought out the worst in the show, and it also showed how it's easy to get carried away with making insensitive remarks about people's medical conditions (which is not appropriate at any time, or anywhere for the matter). It also showed that some people are prone to anger, especially when provoked by inappropriate remarks or commentary about other people. There is a fine line between straight up banter comedy, and inappropriate commentary/remarks/jokes about someone else. The "joke" made by Chris Rock clearly crossed that line. However, violence is never acceptable, and Will Smith should have dealt with him in a professional and a non abusive manner.
The events unfortunately, also brought out racists, Groypers and white supremacists online who would use the Oscars to bring out their black - on - black crimes argument again. It also spurred a debate about domestic violence, double standards and even privilege.
This years Oscars was supposed to be a good and a memorable one, but, sadly, was overshadowed by an event which culminated from a classless and a tacky joke that fell foul of Will Smith, who unfortunately, had reacted to that with violence.
Let's hope that next year's Oscars will be one without any nasty and unfortunate events, and just as memorable! Photo on blog cover by Mirko Fabian on Unsplash |
